Rice Takes Big 12 Weekly Honor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia baseball player Jacob Rice was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday, earning the program’s first weekly honor as members of the Big 12 Conference.

Rice, a junior transfer in his first season at WVU, led the Mountaineers to a pair of wins in four games this past weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. He batted .563 (9-for-16) with three runs, one double, three RBIs, three stolen bases and a sacrifice fly.

A Tulsa, Okla., native, Rice recorded a hit in every game, including a 4-for-5 performance in a victory against Wake Forest in which he scored one run, drove one run and stole a base. He recorded two hits in the second game against Youngstown State and the final game against Wake Forest.

WVU continues its 10-game road trip this weekend at the Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Mountaineers will play Indiana on Friday, UMBC on Saturday and Florida Atlantic on Sunday.

Midwest Nationals Compete at Arizona Junior Fall Classic

The Midwest Nationals participated in the Arizona Junior Fall Classic in over the weekend of October 20-21, 2012.

Coach Eric Briggs led the team to a 2-3 record in the Phoenix area in what turned out to be a great weekend for the Nats players against some of the toughest competition the West has to offer.

There haven’t been too many bright spots in Houston this season, but rookie pitcher Lucas Harrell has certainly been one of them.

The righty was named the Astros’ Rookie of the Year on Sunday by the Houston chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and is set to make his final start of the season in Monday’s series opener at Wrigley Field.

“It’s big for me. I want to end on a good note, I want to try to cap this year off going out on a high note,” Harrell said. “I just want to go out there and give us a chance to win. That would be big for some momentum going into the offseason.” Harrell (10-11, 3.88 ERA) made the starting rotation at the end of Spring Training and was the Astros’ most consistent starter. He leads all Major League rookies with 187 2/3 innings pitched, is second among rookies with his 10 wins and is the only rookie to pitch a shutout this year.

CHICAGO — Surrounded by reporters and a couple of television cameras in the cramped visitors’ clubhouse at Wrigley Field, Astros pitcher Lucas Harrell did something he hadn’t been able to do following a start for more than a month.

“I can smile,” he said.

And for good reason. Harrell capped his outstanding rookie season in style, throwing six scoreless innings to lead the Astros to their second consecutive shutout victory and send the Cubs to their 100th loss, 3-0, on Monday night.

“It was definitely one of those things, I wanted to end the season on a positive note and just give the team a chance to win, and today things just kind of went my way,” Harrell said.

Format will be a 4-man scramble with a 10:00 am shotgun start.

Nationals 17U Red falls 7-1 to Missouri Bulls despite Kendrick’s effort

The Nationals 17U Red lost 7-1 to the Missouri Bulls at Joplin, Missouri on Saturday as #5 allowed zero hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Andrew Kendrick got on base two times in the game for the Nationals 17U Red.

#30, #27 and #6 helped lead the Missouri Bulls. They combined for five hits and three RBIs.

Offenses dominate as the Nationals 17U Scout outscore Natural Baseball 18-8

Scoreboard operators were busy at Joplin, Missouri on Saturday as the Nationals 17U Scout and Natural Baseball combined for 26 runs. Nationals 17U Scout eventually won the offensive battle 18-8 in seven innings.

Hitters on both sides were strong at the plate as the teams combined for 30 hits, including 12 extra base hits.

The Nationals 17U Scout turned the win into a rout with eight runs in the seventh.

The game was back-and-forth heading into the fifth, with five lead changes.

The Nationals 17U Scout pulled out the win thanks to a strong fifth inning. A sacrifice fly by Will Harris scored Drew Bridges and gave the Nationals 17U Scout the lead for good.

Daltan Lovell recorded the win for the Nationals 17U Scout. He allowed four runs over four innings. He struck out four, walked two and surrendered five hits.

The Nationals 17U Scout pounded Natural Baseball pitching, as seven hitters combined for 15 hits, 14 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Natural Baseball jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Natural Baseball got things going when Sherlock singled. Garrett doubled, scoring Shaffer and Elliott. Natural Baseball pushed more runs across when Sherlock scored on a groundout by Clark.

The Nationals 17U Scout tacked on another three runs in the sixth. A wild pitch scored Brad Jelinek for the inning’s first run. That was followed up by Harris‘ double, scoring Bridges.

Gruener helps the Nationals 17U Scout down Rawlings Prospects 10-7

Evan Gruener had two extra base hits, helping the Nationals 17U Scout to a 10-7 victory over Rawlings Prospects on Saturday at Joplin, Missouri.

He tripled in the second and fifth innings.

Drew Bridges recorded the win for the Nationals 17U Scout. He allowed two runs over two innings. Bridges struck out one, walked one and gave up three hits.

In the bottom of the first, the Nationals 17U Scout grabbed the early lead, 2-0. The Nationals 17U Scout attack began with a single from Trevor Crone. Winston Rasmussen singled, scoring Brad Jelinek and Crone.

The Nationals 17U Scout never trailed after scoring four runs in the second on an error and a three-run triple by Gruener.

One run in the top of the third helped Rawlings Prospects close its deficit to 6-3. A sacrifice fly by Dilday gave Rawlings Prospects life. The Nationals 17U Scout stopped the rally after Will Ginger got Benes to fly out.

One run in the top of the fourth helped Rawlings Prospects close its deficit to 6-4. An RBI single by Jasiek sparked Rawlings Prospects’ rally. The Rawlings Prospects threat came to an end when Ginger finally got Hansen to fly out.

The Nationals 17U Scout added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The inning looked promising, as Will Harris singled, scoring Gruener to kick things off. That was followed up by Nathan Strobel‘s single, bringing home Harris.

Three runs in the top of the sixth helped St Louis prospects close its deficit to 10-7. A two-run double by Jasiek and an RBI single by Hansen set off Rawlings Prospects rally. Finally, Ginger got Dyszlewski to to end the threat.

Midwest Nationals 17U Scout Team record 36-15-1.

The Nationals 17U Red fall to Minnesota Starz 5-0 in spite of Payne’s performance

Evan Payne did all he could to give the Nationals 17U Red a boost, but it wasn’t enough to get past Minnesota Starz, as the Nationals 17U Red lost 5-0 in seven innings at Joplin, Missouri on Saturday.

The Nationals 17U Red were led by Payne‘s hitting. Payne went 1-2. He doubled in the fifth inning.

#12 got the win for Minnesota Starz. He pitched six shutout innings. #12 struck out six, walked none and gave up three hits.

Minnesota Starz went up for good in the fourth, scoring one run on an RBI double by #7.

Minnesota Starz scored two runs in the fifth inning, and then followed it up with two more in the seventh. In the fifth, Minnesota Starz scored on an RBI double by #6, scoring #14.

#12 kicked things off with a double, plating #33. That was followed up by #29′s single, scoring #12.
