Charlie served as the head coach of our Red club during the summer of 2009 and will now join the blue team as an assistant. O’Brien, who grew up in Tulsa, graduated from Bishop Kelley High School and played his college baseball at Wichita State University.
Charlie was a catcher in the big leagues from 1985-2000 for the Athletics, Brewers, Mets, Braves, Blue Jays, White Sox, Angels and Expos. Was a member of the 1995 World Series Champion Atlanta Braves. Charlie caught for Greg Maddux, Roger Clemens and Pat Hentgen during Cy Young award years, as well as for eight other Cy Young winners including: Frank Viola, Dwight Gooden, Bret Saberhagen, David Cone, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Chris Carpenter and Jack McDowell.
Charlie has incredible baseball knowledge and loves developing young players by teaching fundamentals and coaching his players on how to play the game correctly. He is credited with inventing the “Hockey Style” mask worn by most catchers today.
